ATleast 50 people who had bought fake bachelor’s and masters degrees and PhD certificates of foreign universities from a couple who were detained last week have come forward to assist police investigations.

the fake paper holders gradually turned up at the Selangor police headquarters over the weekend.

A source close to the investigation said that a small number surrendered themselves after reading about the case, and the rest were tracked down by police.

Initial investigation revealed that the syndicate had sold identical degrees at different prices. In one case, a man claimed he had bought his degree from the couple for RM2,000, and in another, a woman claimed she bought hers for RM14,000.

The source said some of the purchasers claimed ignorance to the papers being fake.

“The man who paid RM2,000 said the money was for enrolment fee, and that the institute had told him his class would only start once they have enough students.

But after a while, he was told there were still not enough students so he was given the certificate instead of a refund,” said the source.
