10 Odisha brokers arrested for land fraud

Commissionerate Police arrested 10 land brokers, including two masterminds, on Thursday for selling a patch of land in Sakhigopal area in Puri district of Odisha to many buyers with fake documents.

It was alleged that the accused had duped many buyers of Rs 2 crore.

According to police sources, one Sukant Parida of the city, along with his associate, had sold 25 acres of land in Sakhigopal area under Satyabadi block by forging documents. Parida had prepared a fake sale deed of the land owned by late Murali Modi of Cuttack by claiming to be Kashi Modi, son of the land owner, in the sale deed.


Parida had even prepared a fake vote identity card in the name of Kashi Modi by placing his photo on it to win the confidence of the buyers, said the police sources.

Suryakant Das, one of the buyers, said Parida and his friends had taken more than Rs 1 crore to sell the land. Before him, Parida had already cheated many other buyers on the basis of fake documents, he added.

After arresting the accused, the Commissionerate Police forwarded the accused to a local court here last evening.
