A Rohini resident’s desperate bid to save his marriage backfired and today he is cooling his heels in Tihar Jail. What is worse is that his wife is a fellow inmate in the same prison.

Indrajeet Singh and his wife Nirmal Kaur were arrested on charges of forgery for submitting fake documents to apply for a US visa for himself and his wife.

Sources in the police said the couple, married for seven years, was experiencing strained relations and Indrajeet’s wife had moved a divorce application in a court. “But his wife desperately wanted to visit the US. So, she placed a condition before her husband that if he wanted to save the marriage, then he should take her on a trip to the US,” a senior police officer said.

Indrajeet was under tremendous pressure to save his marriage and thus succumbed to his wife’s demand.

With his visa application, Indrajeet submitted documents claiming to own a factory and showed his wife as a beautician. Their forgery was detected during the verification of documents. US Embassy officials promptly informed the Chanakyapuri Police and the duo was arrested.

“On November 20, the couple went to the US Embassy in Chanakyapuri and applied for visa. His papers stated that he owns a factory and also claimed that he had been filing income tax returns for the past two years. Nirmal had submitted her job profile written on a letterhead of a beauty parlour,” said the police source.

In reality, Indrajeet works in a private company and Nirmal is a housewife. The senior police officer said the couple told the interrogators that they managed to procure fake documents with a help of a man named Sippi.

“They had paid Rs. 2,800 to the person who had arranged the documents attached with their visa application. The couple claimed to be innocent. They said they didn’t know the documents were fake,” the officer added.

Sources said the couple’s passports also had a French visa stamp of December 2008. On further enquiry, the couple told the police that a travel agent at Mohan Singh Place, Connaught Place, put the stamp on their passports. The police have initiated a search to find this agent.

“The incident could be a part of a fake visa racket active in the Capital which may have serious ramifications. It indicates that a full-fledged organised gang is active,” the source added.
