The 39-year-old had been involved in the sale of fake certificates pertaining to various universities since 2012 and amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 3 crore, DCP (Crime) T Ravi Kumar Murthy told media persons here.

The fraud came to light when one B Karthik Ram, a resident of Madhurawada, lodged a complaint with Task Force after he was cheated by the accused.

Police suspect Krishna is part of a nation-wide racket and they are interrogating some persons linked to the universities whose names have figured in the fraud.

Karthik, who had failed to clear his BTech from a private college, came in contact with Krishna, who promised to get him the degree certificate for Rs 1.75 lakh.

After receiving Rs 1.35 lakh, Karthik was given two marksheets of second semester issued in the name of Manav Bharati University, Himachal Pradesh, Murthy said.

However, when Karthik did not get the degree certificate as promised by Krishna, he got suspicious and lodged a police complaint a few days back.

During investigation, police came to know that Krishna had issued fabricated certificates to 400 students. They ranged from Class X to professional degrees such as BTech, MBA and MCA. He was to issue over 250 more such documents.

The fake certificates had been prepared in the name of varsities based in Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, UP, New Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, police said, adding Krishna was caught in 2011 in a similar case, but charges against him were not proved.

Police have identified a middleman, Gaurav Kuamr of New Delhi, who was paid over Rs 18.2 lakh by Krishna in the past few months.
