The four men who were arrested from a hotel in Jalupura area on Sunday evening were found in possession of nearly 1,000 blank marksheets of various universities.

All the these men needed to do is type in the name, desired marks and other details in one of these marksheets and provide it to a student who would pay money, from Rs 75,000 – Rs 1 lakh – to get a degree in a matter of days, without appearing in exams and attending classes.

These details were later included in the records of the universities to make the degrees legitimate, the city police said on Monday.

With the arrest of these four men, troubles have mounted for Jodhpur National University chairman Kamal Mehta who has been arrested by SOG as it has been established one of these accused was in contact with Manoj Pareek. Pareek was Jodhpur National University’s coordinator and has been arrested in another case related to fake degrees being investigated by the SOG.

ACP, Kotwali, Rajnish Punia said that the police on Sunday arrested four men from a hotel who used to provide degrees of not only Jodhpur National University, but also of Jhansi-based Bundelkhand University, Sikkim-based Ilam University and Karnataka State Open University. Officials said that forged marksheets of Bundelkhand University and Ilam University and Jodhpur National University’s entrance cards for BEd examination were seized from them. The arrested four men have been identified as Abdul Rehman Sarkar, Tanuj Das Khan, Vishwas and Mohit Soni. While Mohit is a resident of Haryana’s Kurukshetra, the three others belong to West Bengal.

“We produced these men in a court on Sunday. The court sent them to two-day police custody. Their interrogation is on. We are trying to find out their nexus with employees and officials of various universities,” said the officer.

Police officials said that all the four men had been providing degrees to students for several years. “We have seized nearly 1,000 blank marksheets. How many marksheets they could have provided to students over the years is anybody’s guess. It’s a mockery of the education system,” a police officer said.

The officials said that the accused used to provide degrees within a few weeks. The men had targeted several youths from West Bengal as the current government is offering direct recruitment as teachers to students who hold BEd degrees. “The name of Alwar’s Sunrise University has also come up during interrogation with these men,” said the officer.

Jodhpur National University chairman Kamal Metha is currently in SOG’s custody. The racket was busted on December 22 when SOG arrested three national coordinators of the university identified as Manoj Kumar Pareek, Shyam Singh Meena and Darshit Ajmera who played the role of mediators while providing degrees to youths fraudulently.

Manoj is a resident of Jagatpura area in Jaipur and runs an institute named Edumasters Career Solutions Private Limited at Rajat Path in Mansarovar. He was also appointed as the national coordinator of the Jodhpur National University. The other accused, Shyam Singh Meena, who belongs to Subash Colony in Chittorgarh, runs Micro Institute at his native place. The trio would allegedly contact youths and give them degrees of the private university.
