In a move to end encroachment in the resettlement homes for project-affected people (PAP) in Mankhurd, the Mumbai Police have identified 22 agents who made fake documents and allotted these homes to people illegally.

The move came in after M-East ward lodged the FIR with Trombay police station regarding encroachment of 78 homes in three buildings of Shivshahi Punarnivas Prakalp Limited (SPPL).

The agents were identified as Ashok Patil, Usha Patil, Sanjay Babar, Asha Sonawne, Jaya Telange, Arjun Pawar, Vicky More, Azam Khan, Munir Khan, Mane from Gautam Nagar, Alam Shaikh, Satish Narkar, Minu, Sampat Kakade, Fate Farooqui, Milind Pathak, Ramakant Jaiswal, Santosh Patel, Anna.

“The agents have been called to the police station for inquiry. If they fail to verify the documents, they will be arrested,” said senior inspector Ansar Pirjade of Trombay police station. “Our officials went to PAP colonies and inquired about agents who sell houses, and the houses allotted by these agents were not present in the BMC record,” he said.

“We are happy with the quick response shown by the police in this case. We will co-operate with them in all aspects,” said assistant municipal commissioner of M-East ward, Kiran Dighavkar. According to the local ward office, many residents have confessed that they were cheated by these agents. People paid around Rs 4-5 lakh for these houses.

“Once these encroachers take possession of the houses, it’s very difficult to remove them because they move the court producing fake documents as evidence,” added Dighavkar. “We will go to the end of the matter and arrest all the people involved in this scam, even if they are government officials,” said Pirjade. Trombay police will also arrange for reserve police force in the area during the time of this action, as they fear law and order situation. As many as 78 families started living in building number 13. The ward officer was informed about the encroachment by a security guard.

The complaint was registered on January 13 under sections 448 (punishment for house-trespass), 465 (punishment for forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged), 474 (possession of forged documents) and 420 (cheating) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
