According to reports from the Higher Education ministry the Jodhpur National University had allotted 25,003 fake degrees to its students and the state government is considering to dissolve the university.

The decision by the state government came as a result of the recommendations made by a high-level committee formed to probe about the fake degree fiasco.

Fake Degrees

Higher Education Minister Kalicharan Saraf said, “The distribution of fake degrees is presently being probed by the Special Operations Group (SOG) even as the department has set up a high-level committee to probe the irregularities.

The committee is expected to submit its report and depending on the recommendation, the state government will decide whether to dissolve the institute or to appoint an administrator.”

He made it quite clear that the state government would not take the irregularities easily and would take adequate actions to punish the university authority.

The query for the probe in the scam case was raised by senior BJP legislator Ghanshyam Tiwari, who demanded to ‘bring the shutters down of these shops’.

It was in reply to his queries that Saraf pointed out that the SOG had investigated almost 38,000 degrees that were issued by the university to its students and almost 25,003 of them were found fake.

The probe has also made it clear that the Vice Chancellor Kamal Mehta had active association while these fake degrees were issued from the university. Saraf further said, “As per the SOG, the degrees were allegedly issued to students without them having to appear in any examination or attend classes, in exchange for money.”

After the probe gets over, there would be decision taken against those who tried to buy the degrees.  A suggestion of dropping ‘National’ from the university also came from the minister.
