With the arrest of five persons, the Delhi police’s economic offences wing claimed to have busted a gang running a syndicate that prepared forged documents, including verification certificates, for issuance of passports under tatkal scheme.

The police said that the case was registered on the complaint of the Delhi regional passport officer who alleged that during the scrutiny of the verification certificates of about 60 applications, it was revealed that they were fake.

On inquiry, the tatkal applicants revealed that they had paid extra fees to agents for submitting the applications, facilitating the procurement of verification certificates and online appointments.

The police said that an investigation was launched and it revealed that the fake documents were prepared using the letterheads and official rubber stamps of officials of various government departments, including GAIL, DRDO and AAI.

“The concerned officials of various departments under whose signatures and letterheads the certificates were issued were examined and it was found out that they did not know about the issuance of any such documents,” said the police.
