Immigration officers in Indonesia have arrested a Malaysian transgender woman who applied for a female passport with fake documents.
Reggeana Fiziana, 38, had sex reassignment surgery in Thailand and want the passport to legally marry her boyfriend, a man from a Arab country who is currently studying in Malaysia.
Transgender people cannot legally change their gender in either Malaysia or Indonesia, and neither country recognizes gay marriage.
Erna Yunanti Murni, head of the immigration office in Batam where Reggeana made her application, said she was arrested on Monday (2 March) after officers grew suspicious when interviewing her.
‘She will be deported, but she will first be processed under the existing law for faking documents,’ he told the Jakarta Post.
Reggeana previously worked at an IT company in Jakarta and is believed to have faked documents stating that she was born and lived in the city.
After intensive questioning, she admitted she was a Malaysian national and had arrived in Indonesia on Sunday.
