A top manager for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is suspended with pay while officials examine his college degrees.

Sources tell The Record newspaper the degrees former Bergen County Sheriff Jay Alpert listed on his application apparently came from a diploma mill.

The newspaper reports Alpert listed master’s and bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice from LaSalle University in Louisiana. The now-defunct distance-learning school closed after its founder was imprisoned on federal fraud charges in 1997.

Albert’s Linkedin page does not have any mention of LaSalle under education.

Gov. Chris Christie’s administration appointed Alpert to the $110,000 job as a senior manager in the Port Authority’s Emergency Management Office in 2010.

The Record says a message left for Alpert at his home was not returned.
