Khan’s National Assembly membership has been suspended on the directives of the Supreme Court since July 20, 2013. A former federal minister, Khan is accused of contesting the 2002 general elections by producing a university degree, which was obtained on the basis of a fake intermediate certificate issued by the Punjab Board of Technical Education (PBTE).

The court directed the accused to furnish two surety bonds worth Rs 100,000 each. The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) had lodged a case against Khan for obtaining a fake diploma to appear in his BA examination.

The ACE alleged that Khan had obtained a duplicate diploma that had actually been issued to another candidate of the same name but different father’s name.

Besides Khan, the ACE booked a former chairman of the PBTE, its secretary, and two other officials for unlawfully issuing the duplicate diploma. The prosecution counsel said that the case had been lodged against Khan on the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan. He said that the ACE had completed its investigation and had found Khan guilty.

Khan’s counsel said that his client has been implicated in a false case and that the PBTE did not have the authority to cancel the diploma.
He said that the accused had been elected a member of the parliament on the basis of that diploma twice.
