The Bhadravathi Rural Police on Tuesday arrested six persons on the charge of creating fake marks cards and other certificates of the Kuvempu University.
Police gave the names of the arrested as Shivakumar, Doodyanaik, Ramu, Siddachari, Devaraj and Shashikumar. The first four are permanent employees of the university and the others are on contract. The arrests were made after raids at eight locations in the vicinity of the university at Shankaraghatta.
The police seized seals of high-level officials of the varsity including that of the vice chancellor, as many as 2,000 blank answer sheets, fake marks cards, convocation certificates and letterheads of the varsity, during the raids. A sum of Rs 1.62 lakh was seized from the residence of Shivakumar and Rs 78,000 from the house of Doodyanaik.
Sridhar Rao, Deputy Superintendent of Police, who led the raids, told Deccan Herald that prima facie it appeared the racket had been operating for several years. He suspected the involvement of high-level officials.
