Suspended Police Constable Digambar Laxman Ghorpade had helped Guljar obtain a fake passport while he was posted at the Bund Garden police station. After the fake passports case was exposed in 2011, investigations revealed that Ghorpade had helped 91 people procure fake passports, and a lookout notice has been issued against 66 of them.
Sajid Batliwala, a close aide of terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, after being arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch, had also revealed he had obtained a fake passport from Pune.
The police filed a chargesheet in the case in August 2011 in the district and sessions court at Shivajinagar. So far, 14 persons have been arrested for preparing or using fake passports in connivance with Ghorpade.
Police Inspector S B Nikam, investigating officer in this case, said, “Guljar was on her way to Mumbai aboard a train when she was nabbed by the Amritsar police. She had produced fake documents stating an address in Camp, in 2009. She later married a man in Pakistan three years ago. Amritsar police nabbed her four days ago and handed her over to us.”
Public Prosecutor Suchitra Narote said, “Guljar had submitted forged documents including a tax receipt, bank statement, school-leaving certificate and driving licence at the time of police verification for obtaining a passport. Police have to investigate how Guljar had prepared these forged documents and whether any other person is involved in this crime. We requested her police custody, which was granted by the court.”
