An investigation has been launched into the Kuwaiti traffic department after expats were found to have bought fake university degrees and then used them to obtain a driver’s licence.

Last year, Kuwait introduced stringent new requirements to qualify for a driver’s licence in a bid to reduce traffic congestion. The requirements, which only apply to expats, include having a university degree or a visa specifically to work as a household driver.

A ban on issuing new driver’s licences to expats also was temporarily put in place, while thousands of foreigners have been deported for traffic offences in recent years.

According to Kuwait Times, immigration detectives this week arrested three men who allegedly sold forged university degrees to foreigners seeking a driver’s license.

The alleged crime was detected when a Syrian man allegedly admitted he had re-gained his licence that had been confiscated during a traffic police crackdown by buying a fake university degree and bribing two traffic department employees.

Several traffic department employees also are being questioned over their involvement in issuing illegal driver’s licences.
