The Karachi Customs has taken a lead in the clearance of imported and luxurious vehicles on fake documents. These include Land Cruisers, Prados and BMWs.
Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Tariq Bajwa and Member Customs Nisar Ahmad Khan have got the list of 232 precious four-wheel vehicles, which were cleared in connivance with corrupt Customs officials during the announcement of smuggled motor vehicle amnesty scheme 2012, by carrying out a secret investigation.
These Rs232 billion vehicles were not present in Pakistan at the time of amnesty’s announcement, rather these were in the UK, Japan, etc. at that time. Tax evaders including car dealers, investors, politicians and other influential personalities had inflicted a heavy loss of billions of rupees to the national exchequer in the shape of customs duties, sales tax and income tax by getting cleared these costly vehicles in connivance with corrupt Customs officials by showing the presence of these vehicles in Pakistan in documents before their arrival several years ago.
The News has got the details and documents of these illegally-cleared vehicles imported through fake documents with the names of receivers of these smuggled vehicles, makers of vehicles, engine power, chassis numbers and even the numbers of national identity cards of those who imported these vehicles. This has proved that some tax dodgers had got cleared these 232 vehicles in connivance with corrupt Customs officials when these vehicles were not present in Pakistan at the time of amnesty granted under the motor vehicles scheme.
