The police claim to have unearthed a racket of finance agents involved in preparing fake character certificates for people in exchange of money.

Uber cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav, accused of raping an executive, had also got a fake certificate made to procure an all-India permit.

Based on Yadav’s interrogation, the police on Thursday arrested Sumit Sharma, one of the agents, on charges of forgery. They are now zeroing in on three other agents suspected to be involved in the crime.

Meanwhile, the process for preparing a chargesheet against Yadav has been expedited, which is expected to be over within two weeks.

Sharma reportedly admitted to have helped Yadav in getting the fake certificates but denied his direct involvement in the crime. He revealed names of three other employees of a finance firm in Lajpat Nagar, who allegedly made the certificate for Yadav. Sharma said that one of the employees, whom the police have called for questioning, had used his own character certificate to prepare fake documents for others. The modus operandi was simple: he would get his own certificate photocopied by covering his name and other details with a white paper. He would then insert his “client’s” name and details in it and get it attested by a notary. He used to visit a cyber cafe to get his documents scanned. Police will also question the owner of the cyber cafe.

Yadav had allegedly paid Rs 5,000 to these agents. They referred him to a tout at the RTO to get an all-India permit, police said. Sharma also revealed that Yadav had used this permit to get a loan of Rs four lakh from a finance company and bought his car in May this year.

Meanwhile, Yadav’s documents have been sent to the forensic laboratory in Rohini for verification.
